Flag football for girls takes another step in Texas. 'You can see their passion'

Heights High School sophomore Emma Syphard never really saw any girls playing flag football when she was younger. She certainly never thought about playing the sport at any point.

“I just thought it was kind of something you did in P.E. class,” she said.

So when Heights coach DeVincent Idlebird approached Syphard about playing on the Bulldogs’ inaugural team this spring, her initial enthusiasm about the opportunity was tepid at best.

“Um, sure. I guess so,” she remembers telling Idlebird.

Syphard feels much differently about the sport now. Now, she’s a champion.
